The Amberjack is a large Atlantic and Pacific fish that is found in the warmer parts of the ocean from New England to Japan of various species from the genus, Seriola and family, Carangidae. Pacific amberjacks, in particular, are considered popular food fish in Japanese cuisine, although the species is consumed across the world and in various culture.
Amberjacks are voracious predatory fish that feed mainly on pelagic and benthic fish, but also on squid and crustaceans. However, young amberjacks tend to feed more on plankton and smaller invertebrates. The predators of amberjacks include larger fish such as sharks or tuna.
Greater Amberjacks mature at around 4 years old, and migrate in late spring to early summer (March to June) to reproduce. They migrate to deeper water to spawn, producing their young near shipwrecks or large objects as a safe haven.

Trivia[]
- In the fan-translation of the manga series, the amberjack that the fishmonger hands over to Kimihito and Mero on the Friendly Connections Market in Chapter 25 is more specific identified as a "yellow tail" (another name for the Japanese amberjack), while the fish is only referred to as amberjack in the official translation. In episode 12 of the anime, which adapts the events of said chapter, however, the amberjack lacks the characteristics of a real 'yellow tail', like the yellow band that runs horizontally along the length of the body, as well as the eponymous yellow tail.
- Mero observing the fishmonger presenting an amberjack caused him to panic, thinking she would feel offended or horrified at the thought that their "relatives" are being served as food. This would eventually be diffused after Mero reveals that she is perfectly fine with eating fish despite being part fish herself, since fish are part of the natural diet of Mermaids.
