Archery is the sport, practice, or skill of using a bow to shoot arrows. Historically, archery has been used for hunting and combat. In modern times, it is mainly a competitive sport and recreational activity. A person who practices archery is typically called an archer, bowman, or toxophilite.
Origins[]
The oldest known evidence of the bow and arrows comes from South African sites such as Sibudu Cave, where the remains of bone and stone arrowheads have been found dating approximately 72,000 to 60,000 years ago. Based on indirect evidence, the bow also seems to have appeared or reappeared later in Eurasia, near the transition from the Upper Paleolithic to the Mesolithic.
Trivia[]
- In myth, the bow is one of the most common weapons associated with Centaurs, to the point that the constellation of Sagittarius is often depicted as a Centaur (although some researchers believe this depiction was an afterthought). In Monster Musume, however, Centaurs are rarely seen by using bows and arrows in comparison, as they mostly instead used swords.
- Despite having used it far less than her other weapons, Centorea is still a formidable archer, not only firing off a rapid volley of arrows, but also using said volley to pin Papi against a wall, managing it with not only leaving the Harpy unharmed, but also leaving Kimihito unscathed.[1]
- One form of archery is known as mounted archery which proves to be more challenging and dangerous as the activity is done on horseback.
- Different cultures develop their own kinds of bows such as the yumi used by the Japanese.
- Due to having more similarities with a gun, using a crossbow isn't called archery.
