The Common Cold is one of the most widespread and regularly-occuring diseases in recorded human history. Commonly caused by a variety of viruses (and, as its name suggests, long-term exposure to frigid temperatures), the common cold specifically comes from infections to the throat and nose, causing symptoms such as constant nasal mucus secretion, regular sneezing fits, and congestion of the airways. For more extreme cases, symptoms become much more severe, such as a high fever, in which medical attention from a professional is not only recommended, but required.
While the symptoms are universally agreed to be unpleasant and the disease is contagious in prolonged contact, the common cold is rarely fatal, and sufferers usually recover roughly two weeks after contracting the disease. While medications for more severe symptoms are available, treatment for the common cold usually boils down to drinking warm fluids and being well-rested.

Trivia[]
- After Kimihito came down with a particularly nasty cold, Ms Smith had him quarantined and put herself in charge of caring for him, though as it turned out she was merely looking for an excuse to slack off. Once Kimihito recovered thanks to Suu nursing him back to health, Smith, having chosen to remain right next to him for the entirety of her stay, wound up catching his cold, and everyone else chose not to care for her due to her laziness.[1]
- While a common cold in humans and many mammals usually has a rather harmless course, reptiles, on the other hand, are very susceptible to colds, because since they have no diaphragm field, they cannot cough up mucus and pus. This allows germs to spread relatively easily and migrate to the lungs, where they can cause serious infections.
- In humans, a cold is most often caused by viruses, but in birds, a cold is most often due to a bacterial infection.
