A Fountain is a man-made structure used to beautify the outdoors by spraying jets of water and reusing it for the same purpose. It can range in size from something as large as a chair to a football field. Some can be used for drinking, recreation or provide nocturnal entertainment.
History[]
Fountains were originally built for purely functional purposes as they were usually connected to underground springs or aqueducts much like wells and were used to bring water to the surface and provide drinking water and water for bathing and washing to the residents of cities, towns and villages. By the end of the 19th century, as indoor plumbing became the main source of drinking water, urban fountains became purely decorative.
Fountains are used today to decorate city parks and squares; to honor individuals or events; for recreation and for entertainment. A splash pad or spray pool allows city residents to enter, get well and cool off in summer. Drinking fountains provide clean drinking water in public buildings, parks and public spaces.
