Gambling is the act of putting faith in taking chances that can either be very fruitful or costly. In the modern era, it mostly refers to the act of playing high-risk probability games which are infamous for being addictive and causing many gamblers to bankrupt themselves. Monetary gambling is done through several games such as solitaire or poker, with the outcome of each turn and move dictating whether the player gains or loses a certain amount.
Gambling can also be done through more technological means, namely through slot machines and roulette wheels as well as digital apps and other websites.
While the consequences of gambling settle around losing money at best, at worst, a severely bankrupted gambler will eventually turn to crime in order to pay off their debts or satiate their addictions, and many criminal groups will fuel their addictions in the name of gaining a disposable pawn. Gambling addicts will also turn anti-social and apathetic and become not only unpleasant but outright abusive depending on the personal characteristics and the severity of the addiction.
Trivia[]
- While most gambling done is for money, some games also involve safer alternatives. One of these is strip poker, where players have to remove a single article of clothing for every round they lose until they end up fully nude. In fiction, it is not uncommon for a particularly sadistic, unpleasant, or at best mischievous character to hide, destroy, or take the loser's clothes and refuse to give them back unless they perform a certain task, which is usually streaking (running through a public area fully nude while trying not to get caught).
- Due to her unpleasant past encounters with human smugglers, Kii's main motivation for joining in as part of the Kobold Casino's staff was to watch unpleasant humans gamble themselves to financial ruin. Despite this, although her skills are remarkable, she is no expert herself.[1]
- After Kimihito lost all his chips in poker and roulette during his test visit to the Kobold Casino at Polt's request by playing with Kii and Lilith, and hadn't won a single game, he had to admit that he was totally, utterly, completely unsuited for gambling. Kii and Lilith therefore amusingly called him a 'pushover'. Fairly, it should be noted that Kimihito's poor performance was partly also due to the fact that he did not fully remember the rules of poker and roulette and generally has little experience in gambling. Fortunately for him, he wasn't playing with real money during the test run, because otherwise it would have meant a loss of 1 million yen (which would have corresponded to approximately 6918 US dollars) for him.[1]
- When Polt asked Kimihito to participate as a test candidate in the pre-opening of the Kobold Casino, she also warned him to keep it a secret from his homestay girls, because while Kimihito, being just a regular citizen, had less to fear regarding the consequences, it could reflect poorly on the girls if they were caught at a casino because they are studying abroad. While Kimihito envisioned hypothetical the consequences, he thought to himself that Miia and Centorea would likely be particularly bad gamblers due to their high impulsivity, while in contrast, Rachnera and Suu, in his opinion, had amazing poker faces, so they might be surprisingly good. In Mero's case, he suspected that she would probably do okay, while he found it hard to imagine Lala at gambling at all, but he doubted it would go well if the Dullahan would to it. Kimihito didn't mention Papi during his concerns.[1]
- Contrary to Kimihito's concerns, Centorea expressed concerns to Ms Smith about gambling in the bonus omake Centaur Girls Hot to Trot. But in fact, due to Centorea's impulsivity, it is quiet likely that she could be tempted into gambling, especially if she would feel personally challenged by it.
