Manga | Chapter 77 |
Gill is a female fishman who, like many other people, was drawn into the world of Arbatel by the magic of the Grimoire and was a member of the swim club and a student at the Grimoire Public High School for a time. She makes their debut in Chapter 77.
Appearance[]
Gill is a teenage girl with a humanoid appearance. However, her arms and legs are covered in scales and she has webbing between her fingers. Gill has two pairs of gills, the first pair being on the sides of her torso while the second pair of gills are on the cheeks of her face. As a Fishman, Gill has fins hanging down on her head and a short fishtail at the back of her head.
Due to her membership in the swimming club, Gill wore a dark swimsuit during her stay at the Grimoire, which had exposed spots at the hips for her gills. Presumably, Gill also wore the enchanted school uniform consisting of a seifuku with a plaid skirt outside of swimming lessons, but this was never shown.
Personality[]
Gill is friendly but also somewhat formal, referring to her swimming instructor/girlfriend as "senpai". She also seems shy and has some self-doubt, as she doesn't think she could surpass her girlfriend's swimming skills. Still, Gill dreams of one day becoming the best swimmer in the world using the techniques her girlfriend taught her. She wants to achieve this goal both for herself and for her girlfriend.
As revealed in her omake in Volume 18, Gill would be happy to "take the next level" with her girlfriend, even going so far as to use the ability of the Fishmen to change gender and maybe to start a family with her girlfriend. This also shows that Gill would be willing to give up her gender identity and parts of her being in favor of something new for her love. But due to being constantly dommed by their senpai, their male side has yet to make an appearance.
Skills and Traits[]
Physical Traits[]
- Fishman Physiology:
- Amphibious: As Fishman, Gill has gills on both her face and the sides of her torso, which allow her to breathe water. She also has a humanoid respiratory system that allows vocalization and mouth breathing. As long as her gills remain moist, she can breathe on land.
- Swimming: As a Fishman, Gill is an excellent swimmer by nature. Since she has gills, swimming actually plays a role in her natural breathing, which allows her to breathe underwater indefinitely without having to surface. Gill can swim a long pool lane in a time of 1:09 minutes, although she still has trouble turning.
- Gender Change: As revealed in Gill's omake to Volume 18, Fishfolk, like many other fish in the real world, can change their gender, which allows them to be either male or female at will, or even to change their gender identity several times during their lives. But due to being constantly dommed by their senpai, Gill's male side has yet to make an appearance.
History[]
Gill was one of the numerous people whose consciousness was absorbed into the magical world of the Grimoire Public High School by Arbatel, although the exact circumstances of how this happened are unknown. Like everyone else, Gill was brainwashed by the enchanted school uniform (or swimsuit) and really believed that she was a student at Grimoire High School and since she is a Fishmen, she became a member of the school's swim club. During Gill's swimming lessons, she developed a romantic same-sex relationship with the human upperclass girl of the swimming lessons.
Plot[]
Gill makes her debut in Chapter 77, where she swims a few laps in the school pool with her girlfriend stopped her time. After Gill finish the lap, her girlfriend is impressed with Gill's speed and says that if Gill was a little faster she would be leaving her own time in the dust. However, Gill doubts that she could this, although her girlfriend encourages her to say that she's just a little scared about swimming against the wall so fast, but that she know Gill can do this.

Gill and her girlfriend.
Looking at her girlfriend's bandaged leg, Gill tells her that she is doing this for her too and that she wants to be the best in the world by swimming like her girlfriend. Her girlfriend is touched by this and they both walk into the locker room holding hands while they talk about how the number one in the world is a tall order. In the locker room, however, the two girls become confused witnesses as Mero wakes up from the school brainwashing while Centorea watches the Mermaid after slipping the gothic lolita clothes made by Tio on her.[1]
Gill was safely sent back to the normal world after Arbatel released everyone's absorbed consciousness in Chapter 80. Gill may also have been among those who sent a petition to Arbatel, since she developed a relationship with her girlfriend thanks to the Grimoire. As revealed in her omake at the end of Volume 18, Gill would be happy to "take the next level" with her girlfriend by using the Fishfolk ability to change genders. But due to being constantly dommed by their senpai, their male side has yet to make an appearance.
Zoological Classification[]

Fishfolk are a pseudohuman race resembling, in affect, humanoid fishes with arms and legs, and with webbing between their fingers. Fishfolk are capable of breathing air and, ironically enough, are more capable on land than the far more humanoid Mermaids thanks to their functional legs.
Trivia[]
- Gill's name is probably a reference of her race having gills which are very obvious on her cheeks and torso.
- Although the description in Chapter 79 states that Gill is a Fishman, she looks very different from Sebasstian and Flounnder. This could be because female Fishman may be more humanoid than males of their species, just like by Minotaurs and Kobolds. Alternatively, it is also possible that Gill belongs to a different Fishfolk subspecies than Sebasstian and Flounnder.
- In the official translation it is wrongly stated that Gill is a Merfolk.
- Gill is the second Liminal girl in the series after Draco to be revealed as a lesbian with the following one being Aya. In Gill's case, however, this is ambiguous, as fishmen can change their gender.
