Hemlock

Hemlock is a Milk Snake with weak paralytic venom. He is the pet of Miia's Mother, and is obedient enough to bite whoever his owner wants him to.

Hemlock makes his debut, albeit only as a cameo, when Kimihito and his homestay girls travel to the Lamia Village at the behest of Miia's mother. Since Miia's mother wants Kimihito to take part in the Serpentine Tournament as a representative for the Lamia tribe, he is supposed to undergo a "special training" the night before. Because Miia's mother had already expected that Miia and the other homestay girls would not agree with this training, she puts an anesthetic in their tea, but this trick doesn't work for Rachnera because she refuses to drink the tea because of her experience with Miia's mother in Chapter 27. Unnoticed by Rachnera, however, Hemlock sneaks up on her and paralyzes her with his venom, so that the Arachne cannot stop Miia's mother when she drags Kimihito to "the Halls of Testing".

While Kimihito completes his "training" in the "Halls of Testing", Hemlock's venom wears off and Rachnera, still weakened, drags herself to the halls, leaning on a stick, where she angrily argues with Miia's mother outside the doors about the purpose of this training. Miia's mother is a bit surprised that Rachnera has recovered so quickly from Hemlock's venom.

Trivia

• Hemlock's name in fan-translations,"Doku", is Japanese for "poison". His name in the official translation, "Hemlock", on the other hand, is the name for a poisonous plant.
• Although Hemlock is portrayed as slightly venomous in the manga series, his species isn't venomous in real life, which makes his name ironic in both the fan-translation and the official translation.
  • Although milk snakes are harmless, they have a colouring similar to that of the venomous coral snake to protect them from predators. However, there is an easy way to tell the two species of snake apart: Coral snakes have red bands bordered by yellow; milk snakes have red bands bordered by black (as seen by Hemlock). It might be easier to remember this rhythm: "Red to yellow, kill a fellow; Red to black, friend of Jack".
