Yamata no Orochi (八岐の大蛇, "8-branched giant snake") or simply Orochi, is a legendary 8-headed and 8-tailed dragon subspecies that resides in Japan. Possessing similar traits to the Hydra, they possess eight serpents attached to their head and have eight serpentine tails. They have a legendary weakness to sake and alcohol, due to the exiled Amatsukami (heavenly Japanese gods) Susano'o and a Kunitsukami (earthbound Japanese gods) couple using sake that was purified eight times to combat the Orochi, who had devoured seven of the Kunitsukami couple's daughters, with the giant monster planning to eat the last, named Kushinada-hime, whom Susano'o would later take as his bride.
Once the beast was in a drunken stupor, Susano'o slew the beast, chopping it apart with his blade Ame no Habakiri, only stopping when one of the Orochi's tails somehow broke Susano'o's blade. Curious, Susano'o used his broken blade to excavate the tail and from that tail came the Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi, one of the Three Japanese Regalia.
Trivia[]
- Kagachi's name is a play on her species, with "kagachi" being the archaic way to pronounce "snake god" (蛇神 Kagachi/Jashin?), and the Orochi is often depicted in modern media as a monster chasing godhood.
