Media Conventions are large social gatherings where fans gather to bond over their shared love of a certain media, namely television, film, literature, and even occasionally toys. In addition to the latest modern media, conventions also commemorate older works of fiction, with most fans often attending just for basking in nostalgia alongside other fans. The companies behind the media also tend to be large presences in conventions, and if an event isn't solely a fan effort it is fully corporately funded, often for the companies to promote the newest products or media based on their IP.
Typical activities tend to include cosplay competitions, browsing through merchandise (either exclusive to said conventions or through trading with fans), and interviews with staff members and actors involved in certain productions.
Trivia[]
- Participants in modern conventions are regularly encouraged to shower or bathe regularly while attending, as the long hours of waiting in long lines tend to cause a large sweat buildup that results in attendees having strong body odor, often proving uncomfortable for others. This is particularly encouraged at conventions during warmer months, where the heat from the sun exacerbates the problem, especially if the attendee is wearing a particularly stuffy cosplay.
- The main reason for Shiishii's repeated Ghost Marriage efforts is so that she can attend Yaoi conventions in Japan without breaking the law or wasting time traveling from Taiwan.[1]
- During the press release for the manga's anime adaptation, the convention booths for the franchise drew in a lot of attention from fans, a number of whom cosplayed as most of the main characters. Exclusive merchandise included a Life-Sized Miia Dakimakura, amongst other paraphernalia.
