A Nightmare is a dream where the dreamer enacts a worst-case scenario that ignites his or her fear. Often caused by stress and poor quality sleep, nightmares are distinct from standard dreams for being much easier to remember than more pleasant dreams.
While personal values can affect what people deem a nightmare, it is universally agreed that having one is considered an unpleasant experience, as they tend to feel much more real than normal dreams.
Although nightmares are generally considered negative, scientific studies have shown that the fear that a person feels in a dream also leads to the release of mental tension in the body and helps people to cope better with these frightening situations in real life.

- As their name suggests, the Nightmare subspecies of the Centaurs in Monster Musume have the ability to give nightmares to any sleeping person they encounter, regardless of species. This seems to be compulsive for the entire subspecies, with Rem Nighdrem reacting horrified just at the thought of no longer giving nightmares to other people.[1]
- While the Nightmare subspecies of the Centaurs has the special ability to give nightmares to others, Rem's secret pages states that Nightmare can also suffer from nightmares themselves. This seems ironic, as it means that Nightmare could theoretically also haunt each other and cause nightmares for their conspecifics.
- One of Miia's worst nightmares is a whole hoard of her fellow Lamias having their way with Kimihito and tiring him out to the point that he was literally on the verge of death by the time she gets to him, essentially depriving her of getting her turn with him.[2]
- Due to being very conscious about her body and especially her breast size, Centorea does not like showing off her body to unwanted attention. As such, the nightmares that she receives from Rem all tend to involve being unable to preserve her modesty.
- However, according to Rem's secret pages, it's generally a hobby of her to give other people nightmares about shameful situations, such as public nudity, which suggests that Nighdrem can at least partly actively choose or influence the nightmares she gives to others. This is also implies by Rem's wording that it is "her personal nightmare style" to give her victims "very nasty" nightmares.[1]
- The Liminal species of the Bakus have the ability to eat dreams, including nightmares. They are also said to have this ability outside of the manga series in the Japanese mythology.
