A picnic is a meal eaten outside, usually as part of an excursion. Picnics are normally set up in summer or spring in places with beautiful scenery such as a park, a forest, or a lakefront with scenic views. Picnics differ from other meals in that they are more of a private leisure event with friends or family, and that someone has to leave the house for it.
Picnickers like to sit on the ground on a rug or blanket. Picnics can be informal with throwaway plates or formal with silver cutlery and crystal wine glasses. Some locations also have pre-built tables and benches for picnickers (occasionally under a dedicated structure) to keep food higher off the ground.
