The first mention of Ms Smith that there are purely female Liminal species in Monster Musume, whereby she cites Lamias and Harpies as examples.
A Unisexual Species is a race that is exclusively comprised of a single biological gender rather than two.
Typically, a species can be reduced to a single sex through changes in the environment causing the probabilities of finding a mate to plummet, either from causing a significant shift in sexual orientation at birth or limiting access to mates, causing significant inbreeding.
Unisex species generally reproduce in two ways:
- Asexual reproduction, in which the offspring ends up genetically near-identical to the parent.
- Sexual reproduction in hermaphroditic species, in which both parents have both male and female reproductive organs.

Trivia[]
- In the manga universe of Monster Musume, Lamias, Harpies, Arachnes and some other Liminal species are confirmed to be female-only races. As such, they require males of other species to be able to reproduce, though all three species have so far overwhelmingly favored mating with humans.
- Prior to the signing of the Cultural Exchange Between Species Bill, Lamias and Arachnes in particular were infamous for their tendency to abduct humans as forced mates.[1][2] Despite being forced into impregnating their captors, a number of the abductees would end up staying with their abductors willingly, though others, such as Miia's father, still chose to run away in fear.[3]
- As hermaphrodites, Leech-Liminals such as Leechi have both male and female sexual organs, which essentially grants them an unlimited choice in sexual partners.[4] Likewise, Fishmen such as Gill have the ability to change their gender at will, similarly increasing their chances of finding a mate.[5]
- Most of the plant-like liminals are shown be to monogendered species with Dryads and Alraunes to be all females.
- In real life, one of the most well-known unisexual species is the genus of whiptail lizards, which consist only of females. The most frequently studied in the lab is the New Mexico species, where it's revealed that during the breeding season, one will play the role of a male by "mating" with another for the latter to lay her unfertilized eggs, which will hatch into females after incubation, hence the nickname "lesbian lizards".
- In real life, the amoeba which are single-cell organisms are most famous for their ability to reproduce assexually by splitting themselves into two.
