WladislausLocket1

Wladislaus' Locket was a locket that originally belonged to the Vampire Wladislaus Drakulya, but was eventually passed on from him to his daughter Curie shortly before his death. While this initially seemed like a fatherly gesture, the locket soon turned out to be part of a dark plan of Wladislaus, as it allowed him to take control of Curie even after his death as a Ghost and continue to use her as an unwilling pawn for his evil plans. This would make the Locket to a key object during Volume 12.

Appearance and nature[]

Wladislaus' locket was a small circular locket worn on a chain around his neck, inside of which was a circular photograph of Wladislaus with Curie.

While the locket was probably originally just an ordinary object, however, after Wladislaus' death, as a ghost he could somehow maintain a connection to the medallion, and thus also to Curie. This allowed Wladislaus to continue to take control of his daughter as a ghost and force her to perform evil deeds against her will in his name. In this regard, it was not necessary for Wladislaus to appear visible as a ghost, as he could do so simply through his thoughts, although his influence seemed to become stronger as he materialized as a ghost in front of Curie and Papi. Wladislaus' control of Curie through the locket was strong, but not absolute, as Curie was eventually able to resist her father with all her willpower.[1]Another limitation was that Wladislaus could only control Curie if she carried the locket with her, and the further away she was from the locket, the less influence he could exert on her.[2]

As seen during the events at the EXPO, it seems that Wladislaus's power grows stronger as darkness grew, as he was able to control and direct Curie's body as well as her mind almost completely at midnight, while in the morning or during the early night he had little to no control over her. Whether this was due to a possible enchantment of the locket, or a restriction of Wladislaus abilities himself, possibly based on the general affinity of ghosts and vampires to the night, is not known.[2][1]

History[]

The Locket was originally owned by Wladislaus Drakulya who, after his wife died, raised their daughter Curie alone. Due to the fact that the vampire race was slowly nearing extinction, he planned to continue his line by forcibly infecting other liminal species with the vampire virus. His plans focused on war-beasts, devils, and harpies as they naturally possessed physical traits that he considered desirable, such as claws, wings and fangs. However, he became fatally ill, so he realized that he was going to die before he would be able to see his plans through.

Wladislaus tried to raise Curie to continue their legacy, however, because of her phobias of blood, heights, bats, and coffins, Wladislaus' efforts to make Curie to a "true" Vampire were in vain, which made him extremely disappointed in his daughter. Shortly before his death, Wladislaus gave his Locket to Curie, and despite her abusive relationship with her father, Curie kept the Locket with her, as it was her only physical memory of him.[3]

Without Curie knowing it, Wladislaus had somehow managed to return as a ghost and through his connection to the locket, he was able to control Curie at night, hoping to realize his evil plans posthumously. This causing Curie to lose control of herself at night and become the more fearsome creature he wished her to be. Though Curie was aware that there was a darkness inside of her that caused these transformations, she was unaware at that time that her father was the reason.[1]

Destruction of the Locket[]

The destruction of the locket.

After Wladislaus materialized as a ghost in front of Papi and Curie and threatened both of them, Lala appeared out of nowhere and severed his connection as a spirit to the world of the living through her supernatural abilities as Dullahan, whereby Wladislaus' spirit dissolved and disappeared. When this happened, the locket fell to the ground and was accidentally trampled on by Centorea, destroying any further possibility for Wladislaus to continue controlling his daughter.[1]

Trivia[]

  • In the manga series, it was never clearly revealed whether the locket was just an object through which Wladislaus could control Curie, or whether it was also the object through which Wladislaus's ghost was connected to the world of the living. However, it is strongly implied that the latter was the case, as since the locket apparently had to be in the immediate vicinity of Curie in order for Wladislaus to control his daughter.
  • It is unknown whether Wladislaus was able to establish a connection to the locket through his own willpower, or whether the locket was possibly enchanted so that Wladislaus could use it as a connection for his ghost in the world of the living. The fact that he gave Curie the locket shortly before his death at least implies that he already knew (or suspected) in advance that he would be able to control his daughter through the locket as a ghost even after his death.
    • While Wladislaus clearly had a connection to the locket, it is ultimately not clear whether the locket had its own special abilities or whether it only served Wladislaus as a tool for his own abilities as a ghost.
